Artifact: Professional Development Session
Summary:
Professional Development is essential for teachers to continue their practice and to continue growing. Recently, I attended the Ga STEM Forum in Athens, Ga. During this professional development, I presented on strategies to be an effective AP Biology teacher, but I also had the honor to learn from other STEM teachers.

Reflection:
Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was your individual contribution(s)?
I spent a day at the Ga STEM Forum in Athens, Ga picking up information from some other amazing teachers in the state of Georgia. Personally, I presented at the start of the day about Tips to being a Successful AP Biology teacher. During this session, I shared the large items that I complete in my classroom that makes the difference to my students in terms of their success in the course and on the exam at the end of the school year. From the other sessions, I learned about a lot of tools and strategies available for usage in my classroom.
Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed. See the portfolio rubric and watch the videos for more details on what to include in your reflection for this question. You must respond to each of the items on the rubric in this question! It is VERY IMPORTANT that you address ALL of the criteria on the rubric. This one question may need to be several paragraphs long to address all of the items on the rubric.
The standard was 6.1 “candidates demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve personal productivity and professional practice”. Being enrolled in this Ed.S. program is already a large demonstration that I want to continue to grow and learn about the current and emerging technology then apply this knowledge to improve my professional practice. This artifact has demonstrated my want to continually grow as I attended this conference to obtain information for my classroom. I learned about the use of animation and augmented reality to support student learning in the classroom. Augmented reality is an emerging technology for the classroom. It allows the teachers to take something abstract and bring it to life. As this is still emerging, there are not as many tools available for usage but I believe in the near future there will be more and more usage of this in classrooms. After the session, I was able to apply knowledge and skills obtained to improve the student usage in the classroom. I went to a session about reading in science. Students are always having trouble understanding science literacy. From this session, I obtained some tools and have implemented these in my classroom. Students were quite responsive to the tools but it did not demonstrate a difference in student proficiency.
What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact? (Not changing anything is not an acceptable response.)
Through this artifact, I have learned that everyone has something to offer from the first year teachers to those who have near to retirement. Every teacher has a strategy that works in their classroom to share or a task they have developed that is outside the box. In order to improve this experience, I would have asked my administrator to allow me to attend for two days in a row instead of just one day.
How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
This work went into faculty development. I have assisted other schools in developing their faculty members to aid in more high quality AP Biology teachers. In addition, I personally have gained professional knowledge to make an impact on my professional practice.
